LEESBURG, Va – A 6.5-mile highway continues to stir passion and divide communities in Northern Virginia with no end in sight.
Much of the information about the proposed Bi-County Parkway, a road around the Manassas Battlefield to Belmont Ridge Road, has come from either the Virginia Department of Transportation, which wants to build it, or local Prince William County residents who oppose it.
In Loudoun County, where the road will end, people are just as divided as they are in Prince William County.
“The state has not handled the outreach well enough and they haven’t explained the project properly,” says Loudoun County Supervisor Ken Reid, who supports the project.
“The people who would drive the road are not engaged.”
He says the debate is similar to what Maryland experienced over the last decade with the Inter-County Connector between Prince George’s and Montgomery County.
Reid represents Leesburg, where the town council voted 5-2 last week to oppose the Bi-County Parkway because it could potentially dump traffic onto Va. 7.
